Amino Acids: An Essential Component of Muscle Recovery and Repair

October 24, 2016 By Corey B

When we exercise, there is a lot of wear and tear that takes place in our muscles as they grow larger. An important component needed for muscle recovery and repair are amino acids. The primary amino acids which are essential building blocks for muscle recovery and repair are branched-chain amino acids or BCAAs: L-isoleucine, L-leucine, and L-valine. Their role in muscle building also helps in increasing the effectiveness of training.

The basic aim of training methods is to achieve muscle hypertrophy, which is an effective muscle size increase caused by the increase in the size of its cells. Or the alternative: hyperplasia, which is a different process in which the actual number of cells increase.

The primary need of muscles for growth is protein. Since amino acids consist mainly of protein, they are highly effective in the growth and repair of muscle tissues. If there isn’t a sufficient supply of amino acids, the body will break down other muscle cells and use the protein to repair the muscles affected during training. This is undesirable and results in an overall reduction in the body’s total muscle mass.

The muscles of your body are responsible for all mechanical movements that your body makes. There are two types of muscles involved: the smooth muscles and the skeletal or striated muscles. Smooth muscles are the ones in internal organs such as the heart and are not usually targeted for growth in body building.

Skeletal muscles are the controllable kind and responsible for all our body’s mechanical movements and are usually attached to bones. Their functioning involves contraction and relaxation, the two states in which a muscle functions. Proteins play a vital role in enabling muscles to remain in either of these states. This is where a balanced diet and regular consumption of amino acids in the form of supplements or otherwise, comes into the picture and are especially vital for athletes and body builders.
