Curcumin is a substance that has been shown to significantly slow and block the growth of breast cancer, prostate cancer, lung cancer, and skin cancers. And while the drug companies are racing to develop a drug they can patent and sell to us, this natural substance is readily at hand.
Curcuma longa is a tropical plant similar to ginger. Its roots contain turmeric, a bright yellow substance rich in curcumin. And this simple, common spice has been used for centuries in Chinese and Indian medicine. But only over the past few years has there been any scientific documentation of its extraordinary healing effects. Among its many actions against disease are curcumin’s many different ways of interfering with cancer. Among other things, curcumin can actually block harmful chemicals from entering our body cells.
Estrogen mimicking chemicals for example, often support and accelerate the growth of breast cancer cells. In one recent study, curcumin reversed this growth by 98%. Possibly the most thoroughly studied characteristic of curcumin is its ability to interfere with signals telling cancer cells to grow. By doing so, studies have shown that curcumin can prevent ulcers from causing cancer. Researchers at the University of Missouri caused significant growth inhibition of some skin cancers by treating them with curcumin. Colon cancer is another disease that has responded favorably to treatment with curcumin. Inflammation plays a significant role in the growth of colon cancer and curcumin is well known for its anti-inflammatory properties.
This makes curcumin a powerful inhibitor of colon cancer. The antioxidant properties of curcumin have been recognized, and utilized, for years. That’s the reason you see Turmeric so commonly used as a spice in processed meats. Turmeric is not there for the flavor. Turmeric keeps oxygen from turning meat rancid, and by extension, Turmeric protects us from cancer by keeping free radicals from damaging our bodies.
