Yams are a healthy root vegetable similar to a less-sugary sweet potato. Yams are rich in fiber, and are also a great source of many vitamins and minerals, especially manganese, potassium and vitamin C. Yams also contain a compound called diosgenin that appears to be associated with higher cognitive performance. The antioxidants in yams may also help fight off inflammation and even cancer. There is also some evidence to suggest that yams may help regulate your blood sugar levels.
