Though there was scientific data that proved that honey was efficacious when it comes to improving athletic performance, there had heretofore been no such similar study to prove whether or not the same could be said for bee bread. So, researchers at the University Sains Malaysia in Malaysia, elected to fill the knowledge gap with a study of their own. Researchers recruited a dozen male recreational athletes as participants of the study. Participants were given either a specified amount of bee bread, or a placebo, for 8 weeks. After a break of 4 weeks a second phase of 8 weeks ensued. During the scientific trials the athletes were required to run at 60% of their respective maximal oxygen uptake for an hour and a half. Blood samples to measure the antioxidant state of the athletes were taken. Though bee bread, like pollen and honey, has long been recognized with affirming scientific data as a nutritious food, the Malaysian study showed specifically that athletes given bee bread had an increased antioxidant status, and not just on the day of receiving the bee bread. Participants showed improvement after exercise, even a day after exercise, and even after the supplementation period. The scientifically gathered data was presented in the “International Journal of Applied Research in Natural Products.”
Key Takeaways:
- Researchers from the University Sains Malaysia in Malsaysia performed a study using bee bread.
- Findings were published in the “International Journal of Applied Research in Natural Products”
- The study showed that supplementation with bee bread improved running performance and the antioxidant status of the runner.
“Based on the results of the trials, the participants who received daily supplementation of bee bread ran longer than those who received the placebo.”
