Details about How Oatmeal Can Lower Cholesterol

October 18, 2016 By Corey B

To avoid cardiovascular diseases, it’s important to ensure that you cut down on the amount of cholesterol in your body. Taking the right diet is one sure way of ensuring that these levels are properly checked. Scientific study has proven that eating oats can greatly lower your cholesterol levels. This is achieved as discussed below.

Oatmeal and oat bran contain a soluble fiber called beta-glucan. This viscous water soluble fiber is responsible for decreasing your body’s LDL (low-density lipoprotein) levels. This type of cholesterol is also called the bad cholesterol or lousy. The good news is that the presence of beta-glucan in your body doesn’t negatively affect the good cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein abbreviated as HDL) levels. This soluble fiber, once in the system, will significantly reduce or hinder the absorption of cholesterol into one’s bloodstream. As the fiber digest, it becomes gooey and sticks on the cholesterol to stop its absorption.

All you need is between 5 and 10 grams of this soluble fiber and your body is well protected. Studies show that if your diet is enriched with 3.5 grams of beta-glucan from oats per day, then it will not only reduce the levels of LDL and apoB (apolipoprotein B) but also those of non-HDL. Actually LDL cholesterol will reduce by 4.2%, apoB by about 2.3% and non-HDL by about 4.8%. Here, apoB is a lipoprotein that is responsible for carrying the bad cholesterol through your bloodstream.

Whether you take oat for your breakfast or decide to add ground oatmeal to your preferred food, the results are good and you will enjoy great health. Nowadays, you can get already packed oats in the supermarket. These instant oats are equally good for your body. An easy way to avoid blood clots and other blockages in your blood stream is by ensuring your daily intake of oat is improved.
