Although there is anecdotal evidence that elder berries are healthy for humans, there has been little scientific research to accompany the general consensus of herbalists. Historically herbalists have believed that elderberries boost the immune system and provide protection, specifically against colds and respiratory infections. Some recent study does suggest that the fruit has some antioxidant power as well as some antiviral activity in its components. Because the berries are rich in flavonoids and vitamin A they could be of use in the case of acne, wrinkles and age spots. Another study wherein participants used lozenges with elderberry extract did seem to support the herbalists contention, as participants experienced fewer cold symptoms and had them for a shorter duration.
Key Takeaways:
- The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health cites a need for further research into elderberries purported health benefits, despite long-standing anecdotal evidence.
- Herbalists espouse the use of elderberries to boost the immune system and thereby ward off respiratory infections.
- A systemic review in 2010 made note that elderberries may have antioxidant and antiviral components.
“Native Americans and European herbalists have long used elderberries for their supposed range of health benefits.”
