Instead of paying farmers subsidies to grow unprofitable crops, wouldn’t it make more sense to legalize hemp agriculture and unleash billions in profit potential?

As he Trump Administration contemplates 12 billion dollars in agricultural subsidies to farmers, it might be a better idea to legalize and encourage production of highly profitable hemp instead of other, less profitable crops. Hemp does not contain psychoactive THC but does contain medically useful CBD, which has demonstrated great potential as a legitimate pharmaceutical. Hemp also has a wide array of industrial uses. Congress is currently considering legislation to remove hemp from the controlled substance list and make hemp farmers eligible for US government grants and for crop insurance.
