The Benefits of Probiotics To The Colon

June 5, 2015 By Darrell Miller

humanfloraIn the colon, there exist over 700 species of beneficial or the good bacteria. These bacteria are called probiotics. They are living microorganisms similar to the good bacteria found in your digestive tract. They live in the large intestines. This is, in other words, to mean that they live with us in a mutually beneficial relationship. The colon also contains harmful bacteria in a ratio of 80-85% beneficial bacteria to 15-20% harmful ones. This is considered fairly normal within the colon.

The working of probiotics

  •     – They help digest or break down the fiber
  •     – They produce some important vitamins
  •     – They fight yeast and fungal infection
  •     – They help in the production of antibodies that aid the immune system.

The health of Colon is quite paramount. Colon health is basically helping the healthy bacteria to outnumber by far the harmful bugs, and that is what you can do for colon health. Your digestive tract acts as host to good bacteria. Probiotic supplements add to the good bacteria in your digestive tract.

The Benefits of Probiotics

They are used to treat cramping, gassiness and diarrhea especially if these symptoms are caused by antibiotics that treat infections. When the antibiotics kill these good bacteria in addition to the bad, the balance of bacteria in the colon is disrupted. You can thus use them to help bring the colon bacteria back into balance.

How probiotics are beneficial to the health

The gut is the largest organ of the immune system, and the better you feed it, the better you feed your immune system. When you consume probiotics, you are essentially feeding your immune system to help it work better.

Boost to the intestinal immunity

Friendly bacteria are used to enhance the intestinal immune defenses. They enhance the immune barrier of the gut lining helping increase immunoglobulin and increase the thickness of the intestinal mucus.

Help promote a healthy gut environment

They produce acidic and lactic acid that creates a more acidic environment in the gut which favors the growth of good bacteria – the good bowel bugs and discourages the growth of harmful bacteria- the bad bowel bugs

They reduce intestinal allergies

They promote anti-allergic process by stimulating the production of the growth factors that suppress the allergic response and increase tolerance. They are thus helpful in reducing the severity of inflammatory conditions. They also help in alleviating inflammatory bowel diseases by suppressing the auto-immune response of the gut.

Production of healthful nutrients

They ferment some of the fiber in the food to form short chain fatty acids that nourish the cells lining the colon and thus stimulating the healing of these cells. They reduce the likelihood of colon cancer. The short chain fatty acids are also absorbed into the bloodstream and travel to the liver where they help to lessen the liver’s production of cholesterol.

Factors like diet can negatively impact your good bacteria, even if you are healthy and active. You need to add bacteria to your health routine. It functions as the good bacteria found in two parts of your digestive tract to help in supplementing the digestive health of the colon.
