Understanding Ulcers

December 10, 2013 By Darrell Miller

What is Ulcers
Licorice1Ulcers are ‘breaks’ in the membranes of particular body organs that hamper the proper functioning of those organs. Such breaks can occur in the mouth, digestive system, skin, esophagus etc. Generally, ulcers are named after the organ where they occur. For instance, an ulcer that develops in the duodenum ( part of small intestine ) is called a duodenal ulcer. Peptic ulcers, however, can occur either in the stomach or duodenum as it is related to the regions that come in direct contact with enzymes and acids of the stomach.

Causes:

Earlier, ulcers were believed to be caused by stress factors, heredity, and unhealthy lifestyle habits including consumption of rich and spicy food, caffeine, alcohol addiction, tobacco etc. The membranes were eroded gradually due to acid secretion resulting in ulcer formation over a period of time. Today, the primary cause of peptic ulcers is considered to be bacterial infection.

Some other causes of ulcer include overuse of painkiller medicines like Ibuprofen, Aspirin etc, smoking and the natural aging process.

Role Of DGL Licorice In The Treatment Of Ulcers

Deglycyrrhizinated or DGL licorice is a herbal derivative of the Licorice plant minus the ‘glycirrhizin’ (active licorice component) part. Glycirrhizin is removed due to the negative side-effects that it can supposedly cause if consumed.

There are surveys and clinical studies that highlight the importance of DGL licorice in healing peptic ulcers. A number of contemporary medical practitioners believe this form of licorice to be an effective alternative to over-the-counter ulcer treatment medications. The herbal supplement helps fight ulcers naturally and has been successfully used for the same, especially for gastric and duodenal ulcers. Healing occurs as this magical gift of nature addresses the basic cause of an ulcer by treating the tissues of the digestive system. It stimulates the release of substances that protect the lining of the stomach.

With DGL Licorice, one can hope to recover better from an ulcer attack.
