What Foods to Avoid With Gout

February 1, 2021 By Darrell Miller

Gout is a form of arthritis known to us for centuries. It was considered a disease of the rich, because it was believed to be caused by foods and beverages that were not affordable to poor people. Today, that distinction is no longer present. It is an inflammatory disease, and some foods are more likely to cause inflammation than others. In general, foods that are most likely to trigger the reaction are those high in purines, which is a group of compounds found in our bodies and food naturally.

Key Takeaways:

  • Sugars tend to increase uric acid which is bad for inflammation when people have gout.
  • Avoiding processing foods is good for every individual and their health. It is no surprise that cutting these out can help gout systems.
  • Red meat as well as seafood can raise uric levels as well. It’s good to opt for low fat options.

“Uric acid is created as a byproduct when either exogenous and endogenous purines are processed by the body. The majority of uric acid is reabsorbed by the body, with the remainder being excreted in the urine and feces.”
