What the colour of your urine says about your health: Key things to look out for when you have a wee

August 10, 2017 By Darrell Miller

The color and smell of your urine can give you an indication of your health. If your urine is a dark yellow, you are dehydrated and should drink more water throughout your day. If you find it is brown, it may be the result of an antibiotic you’re currently taking. However, if it stays brown for a prolonged period, it could indicate a gallstone. Bright yellow urine is usually the result of certain vitamin supplements, but is not a sign of any other health issues. Clear urine is an indication that you have been drinking more water than you need to. In many cases, this is harmless, but over-consumption of water can kill you. Red urine is an indication of either the presence of blood, which is grounds for a medical examination as it could be a symptom of cancer, or is the result of your diet containing many red fruits and vegetables. Green pee is caused by either asparagus or certain antidepressants. Cloudy urine is a sign of the presence of proteins, which could be caused by infection. Foamy urine is also the result of proteins in your urine stream, but in this instance, it’s a sign of your kidneys not working properly. If it hurts to go to the bathroom, this is a sign of an STD and you should see a doctor. Make sure to drink water throughout the day, drink water with meals, don’t be worried about the diuretic effects of caffeine in small doses, and stop drinking earlier in the day to prevent late-night bathroom trips.

Key Takeaways:

  • The shade, odor and consistency of your urine can be affected a great deal by your level of hydration.
  • A well-hydrated, healthy individual should put out liquid that is about the tone of straw, or champagne.
  • Thirst is not always the best indicator of needing fluid, as it sometimes kicks in only when levels are dangerously low.

“Perhaps the next time you flush the loo, have a look. That’s because the colour and smell of your urine can give you clues about your health.”
