What effect does pygeum has on an enlarged prostate?

August 7, 2013 By Darrell Miller

Prostrate glands are male organs that produce the most fluid that
forms the semen, the milky substance that transports and nourishes the
sperms. Prostrate glands are located beneath the bladder.

What causes the enlargement of the prostate gland?

Before we can explore the causes of the prostate gland
enlargement, it would be necessary to explore the immediate dangers that
results from the enlargement of the prostate gland. When the prostate
gland enlarges, the urethra, (which passes through the center of the
gland) will get obstructed. This poses challenges to the exit of urine.

Causes of enlarged prostate

Enlarged prostate is a common complication that affects most men. Some of the common causes include:

1. BPH (Benign Prostate Hyperplasia)

This is a condition the results from a prolonged exposure to
male hormones e.g. testosterone and DHT.  BPH has been singled out as one
of the prevalent causes of enlarged prostate.

2. Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is another common cause of enlarged prostate. In
fact, an enlarged prostate gland is often termed as a symptom of
prostate cancer.

3. Prostatitis

Prostatitis is a health concern that results from infection or
inflammation of the prostate gland. According to research scientists,
when there is an inflammation in the prostate gland, the gland enlarges
as an alert to warn that there is a problem. The swelling is
characterized by obstruction of the urine. The good news is that
prostatitis can be treated using antibiotics.

pygeum supplementWhat effect does pygeum has on an enlarged prostate?

Pygeum, also called prunus Africana, is an indigenous tree/plant that is known to effectively treat an enlarged prostate gland. In addition, it has been known to give a positive response to ailments like kidney diseases, erectile dysfunction, and male baldness. The tree is normally found in sub-Saharan Africa especially the south and central Africa. The
plants ability to treat an enlarged prostate gland is attributed to the following phytochemicals that is contained in the plant:

  • Tannins
  • Phytosterols
  • Ferulic
  • Triterpenes
  • Plant Sterols

How does it help?

According to independent research studies, the phytochemicals
can displace the receptor sites that testonsterone and DHT use in the
prostate, slowing or stopping the growth of prostate cells and are
responsible for the alleviation of the symptoms associated with male
hormones on the prostate. Along with pygeum, one can also consume green
granny apples and carrots each morning, “green granny apples” have a
positive effect on the prostate as well.  An apple a day does keep the
doctor away.
