What Astaxanthin Does For Eye Health

June 19, 2016 By Corey B

Astaxanthin is an antioxidant that can promote eye health. In particular, this reddish pigment is a carotenoid. This is a naturally occurring compound that can be found in algae and various different marine animals.

In particular, astaxanthin is known best for what causes salmon, shrimp and various other types of seafood to develop red colors. This is a keto-carotenoid that is typically produced by the metabolic processes generated by these creatures.

The key point about astaxanthin is that it works as an antioxidant. It removes excess oxygen particles and free radicals that might have built up in the body over time. This allows the body to stay healthy. More importantly, it focuses on the eyes above all other parts of the body.

In particular this helps to protect the eyes and keep them from suffering from excess damages caused by free radicals. As astaxanthin works, it moves through the body and makes it easier for your eyes to take in the blood they need. It allows blood to flow properly without obstructions caused by what comes into the eyes.

A Stronger Option

Astaxanthin is more powerful than many other comparable antioxidants, particularly lutein and beta-carotene. This comes from how it works with a stronger approach to finding different dangerous free radicals around the body.

It moves faster and penetrates tissues effectively. It works harder than other antioxidants to clear out the free radicals that can harm the eyes.

Crossing Blood Properly

More importantly, astaxanthin will cross the blood barrier better than other similar antioxidants. It can cross the blood-brain barrier as well as the blood-retinal barrier that keeps your eyes protected. This is something that lycopene and beta-carotene cannot do. Astaxanthin will target the free radicals in your area and protect them thanks to how it can move through the blood barrier.

Other Benefits

Astaxanthin, in addition to being a strong antioxidant, has many other special benefits. It can absorb UV rays and protect your eyes from further damage. Of course, eye protection is recommended for anyone’s health.

This also reduces inflammation around the eyes. As a result, blood can move into the eyes well enough.

This can reduce DNA damages in the eyes as well. As the DNA is protected, it will be easier for the eyes to stay healthy.

As A Supplement

The only foods that contain astaxanthin are sea creatures that consume the algae that contain it. These include various forms of shellfish. While you can always consider adding it to your diet, it is best to use a good supplement. Your body will not be able to take in the astaxanthin that it needs through diet alone. Added outside support is needed to provide your body with the protection it demands.

Astaxanthin will certainly be important for your eyes. This antioxidant will work better than many others in that it can easily treat your eyes by providing them with the support that they need to keep excess oxygen particles out of the way. This is much more effective than what you might normally find elsewhere.
