Confirmed: Artificial sweeteners raise the risk of type 2 diabetes

October 1, 2017 By Darrell Miller

Artificial sweeteners are not better for you. They are made from chemicals a lot of the time that your body doesn’t know how to handle. If you use them you are also at a higher risk of developing type two diabetes. This condition is dangerous. It can make your life hard to deal with and can lead to other things going wrong as well so should be avoided. Using regular sugar in moderation is actually preferable.

Key Takeaways:

  • According to a University of Adelaide study, consuming artificial sweeteners can predispose a person to developing type 2 diabetes.
  • In some ways, artificial sweeteners are worse than sugar because they change gut bacteria, harming the body’s ability to properly digest nutrients.
  • While the FDA claims that artificial sweeteners are safe in moderation, many studies have found that they may contribute to significant weight gain.

“A study from Israel’s Weizmann Institute of Science found that artificial sweeteners promote diabetes and obesity after studying mice who drank water containing aspartame, sucralose, or saccharin.”
