Food Allergies and Depression

October 4, 2016 By Corey B

People who suffer from allergic reactions are more vulnerable to depression. According to some research studies, there is a link between seasonal food allergies and clinical depression. People with food allergies are two times likely to suffer from depression as compared to people with no allergies.

People with food allergies are likely to suffer from severe allergic symptoms which take a great toll in their emotions and this accelerates the chances of depression. Food allergies interfere with sleep patterns causing poor sleep which leads to low concentration and depression. It should be noted that there is also a biological basis to the allergy blues that allergy patients suffer.

It is very important for an allergic reaction patient to get to know the effects and symptoms of these allergic reactions since it helps them put the possible negative emotions into context. This is regardless of the exact link between depression and food allergies. Patients should be aware that allergies can cause feelings of sadness, lethargy and even malaise. This helps them not to associate this negative symptoms with other things and help understand that by managing this allergic reaction symptoms they could as well control the symptoms. This allows better mood and reduces the chances of being depressed.

It should be noted that this should not be an excuse for people suffering from depression to evade or ignore psychotherapy, antidepressant medications or any other treatment for that condition. It should also not be a reason for people with food allergies to turn away from undergoing the proven allergy treatments.

In conclusion, even if there is thought be a connection between food allergies and depression people with depression should undergo the normal depression treatment while people with food allergies should seek the necessary medical attention for their condition as well.
