Selenium levels linked to lower risk of premature death, decade long study reveals

April 7, 2020 By Darrell Miller

Selenium is a mineral that everybody needs, but younger kids, don’t need as much. It is an anti inflammatory that can actually be used to combat a lot of chronic conditions that older people tend to suffer from. If you are low on selenium, it could lead to chronic conditions such as cancer, or even depression. If you are not sure if you are getting enough, it never hurts to make taking it part of your daily routine, the amount you take depends on a lot of things, but as a general rule 55mcg should be enough.

Key Takeaways:

  • Low levels of selenium was associated with a significantly increased risk for all-cause mortality, even when controlling for confounding factors.
  • People with the highest levels of selenium had the lowest levels of key inflammatory markers, including C-reactive protein and interleukin-6 (IL-6).
  • As with most minerals, vitamins, and other nutrients, the exact recommended daily allowance (RDA) depends on individual factors.
