August 31, 2016 By Corey B

Doctors prescribe statins to decrease the chances of stroke due to high cholesterol. This actually helps lower cholesterol in ones body but it also has side effects. Some of the side effects are described below and the alternative methods that you can use to make sure that your body is not at risk.

Statin

Muscle Pain and Damage

People taking statins mostly complain of muscle pain. This pain ranges from mild to extremely painful. It can be muscle weakness, soreness or tiredness but the patient is bound to feel it. When it comes to muscle damage however, there is an extremely rare chance that this occurs to a patient. It can cause a type of muscle damage known as rhabdomyolysis which is extremely rare .

Liver Damage

Statin drugs increase the enzyme production of the body. It can cause liver inflammation. If the increase is mild, there is no need to worry. However, beyond certain standards, you may want to take alternatives. The symptoms include upper abdominal pain,  dark colored urine, yellowish skin, appetite loss, and fatigue.

Memory Loss

There are some people who have actually developed memory loss while they were taking statins. However, the moment that one stops taking this medication, this side effects reverse and the patient is back to his or her normal self. If you happen to experience any sorts of confusion or memory loss then it is really advisable to contact your doctor.
