In a trial with over 30 adults in a 10 week diet consisting of heavy fermented or fiber rich food, the effects on the gut microbe and immune system was different between the two. It was shown that fermented foods lead to an increase in the persons gut microbe. Looking at the high fiber diets, it was shown to have a less diverse gut microbes. The next step that the researchers want to do is to check to see if the two diets synergize in anyway.
Key Takeaways:
- Researchers found eating fermented foods was associated with less activation of immune cells and lower levels of inflammatory proteins.
- Those eating a fiber-rich diet did not experience the same level of microbiome diversity.
- Researchers intend to investigate whether fermented foods and high-fiber foods create synergy when influencing the microbiome.
“A diet rich in fermented foods such as kimchi, cottage cheese, and kefir can enhance the diversity of gut microbes and reduce molecur signs of inflammation, say researchers at the Stanford School of Medicine.”
