Why you need Selenium for proper health.

What is Selenium

sea foodSelenium is one of the micro nutrients that are essential in our bodies on a daily basis. The mineral can be ingested either as a health supplement or by eating foods that are rich in it. Sea foods and Brazil nuts are the most common sources of the mineral.

There are many benefits that are associated with selenium in the body. Some of them include:

Cancer prevention

Selenium is known to aid in repairing DNA as well as improvement of the immune systems. These properties make it one of the best minerals whose intake helps in preventing cancer within our bodies. The minerals effects on endocrine and apoptosis also play a vital role in fighting various kinds of cancers. The improved immune system is also responsible for fighting various viral and bacterial diseases in the body.

Heart Diseases prevention

Selenium is responsible for breaking down of lipids as well as preventing the body’s platelets from aggregating and hence helps in preventing various cardiovascular diseases.

Cognitive abilities

Elderly people with low levels of selenium tend to have a decline in their cognitive abilities. This could be attributed to lack of its antioxidant capabilities. Therefore, to reduce the risk of cognitive impairment, it is advisable to continue taking the mineral in normal doses.

Thyroid functioning

The thyroid gland is one of the most vital glands in the body. Selenium is responsible for the secretion of the T3 hormone which in turn carries out all the functions of the thyroid gland.

Apart from the usage that the body can obtain from its ingestion, it can also be included in beauty products such as shampoos to help in the fight against dandruffs.

In conclusion, selenium is a mineral whose benefits are immeasurable. Therefore, it is advisable that we all take about 50 milligrams of the element on a daily basis for its effectiveness in the body.
