How Does D-Ribose Help the Heart?

May 6, 2011 By Darrell Miller

D-Ribose

D-Ribose is a monosaccharide known for its special benefits to heart health. But unlike other sugars, it does not have any impact on blood sugar levels. And its addition to our diet does not interfere with the rate of absorption of carbohydrates found in the foods we eat. More importantly, it replenishes the energy resource of myocardial cells, even improving post-ischemic diastolic heart failure.

Simple sugars fuel most of our activities. Glucose is the biological precursors of ATP, a nucleotide responsible for intracellular movement of energy. As such glucose is absolutely necessary at the cellular level. Other simple sugar affects energy metabolism one way or another. D-Ribose becomes a subunit of ATP after it undergoes the process of phosphorylation, making it quite indispensable.

Affects Energy Metabolism

The transfer of chemical energy inside the cells is supervised by adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, the reason why it has earned the moniker “molecular unit of currency”. Most organisms utilize glucose to produce ATP. Introducing a phosphate group to D-Ribose enables the latter to be utilized in the synthesis of ATP, which in fact comprises a purine base attached to the carbon atom of ribose.

In a study that evaluated different exercise levels, the utilization of ribose is most prevalent in subjects engaging in exhaustive physical activities, which means the body is likely to utilize this pentose sugar in situations that results in tiredness bordering cellular exhaustion. That being said, supplementation of D-Ribose has been reported to improve oxygen consumption at any given time.

D-Ribose and Cellular Recovery

Induces Cellular Recovery

D-Ribose has been observed to be particularly helpful for the muscular tissue of the heart. As it is a structural component of ATP, its presence in our diet appears to influence ribose uptake, notably in the cardiovascular system. Researchers believe that it can be of help to patients suffering from ischemic heart disease and heart failure, though more studies are needed to establish its benefits.

Early studies suggested that supplementation of D-Ribose may effectively replenish myocardial energy by raising ATP levels in cells found in the heart. There are many conditions that affect the production of ATP throughout the body. The heart is susceptible to damage whenever the body fails to produce adequate energy. R-Ribose is pivotal in the amelioration of myocardial damage as it also facilitates cellular recovery.

Normalizes Blood Pressure

Diastole is the phase in a cardiac cycle when the heart fills with blood after contraction, the period it draws out blood into the rest of the cardiovascular system. This phase becomes compromised when the left ventricle experiences stiffness, which results from high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes mellitus, and systolic dysfunction, among others. Regular intake of D-Ribose has been recorded to improve diastolic relaxation and promote healthy blood flow in the process.
