Are you taking artificial sweeteners on a daily basis? Do you think that these are safe? Nowadays, artificial sweeteners are widely used. These are mixed in a variety of foods, drugs, and drinks. Though people think that these sweeteners are safe and can be consumed without any side effect. The reality is that since the introduction of these sweeteners, the media is focusing on the negative factors such as potential cancer related to the artificial sweeteners. The risk has become a social threat. As almost all the citizens of Western countries is taking these sweeteners knowingly or unknowingly.
According to research reports from the Ramazzini Institute, these sweeteners can cause cancer, especially leukemia. Another report, conducted by National Library of Medicine, says both the first generation sweeteners such as aspartame, cyclamate, and saccharin as well as the new generation sweeteners such as the sucralose, acesulfame-K, neotame, and alitame, can be harmful to the humans. First time in 2012, the findings were presented at a London conference. It encouraged The Center for Science in Public Interest to relegate Splenda from the safe category.
The first generation sweeteners are considered more harmful to humans than the new generation sweeteners. Among the first generation sweeteners, Saccharin causes bladder cancer in rats, if fed in high doses. Similarly, heavy consumption of artificial sweeteners such as the 1,680 mg per day can cause bladder cancer to the humans as well. As people are having artificial sweeteners every day from the different sources, it will not be easy to know the amount they are having and the harmful effects.
All the research reports say about the danger of the first generation artificial sweeteners; they are still not sure about the new generation sweeteners. However, current reports say, the probable risk of new generation artificial sweeteners to cause cancer is negligible.
