What Are The Health Benefits Of Pine Bark?

June 6, 2012 By Darrell Miller

Pine bark extract also known as Pycnogenol

Pine bark extract (PBE) are obtained from the bark of maritime pine tree, and are known to be rich in proanthocyanidins. In fact, they contain a unique combination of organic acids, bioflavonoids, and procyanidins. Clinical studies in past few years have shown that supplementation with pine bark extracts improved the blood flow to muscles resulting in speedy recovery after strenuous workouts. This study involved 112 participants, and amply demonstrated that PBE significantly reduced cramps, muscular pain, and cramps in both athletes, and normal healthy individuals. Further clinical studies were carried out by scientists of University of California, Berkeley, which showed that pine bark extracts are quite rich in antioxidants as compared to vitamin E, vitamin C and lipoic acid. This explains why these bark extracts were so popular in ancient folk medicine. PBE also contain oligomeric proanthocyanidins, (pycnogenol), which is an antioxidant biflavonoid compound.

Benefits of pycnogenol:

• Stimulates immune system, which results in reduced inflammation • Reduces cell damage and signs of aging • Binds effective with elastin and collagen, and protects and maintains healthy organs, skin, arteries, and connective tissues. • Promotes healthy circulatory system due to the production of endothelial nitric oxide Let’s have a close look at various health benefits of pine bark extracts: *

Anti-inflammatory

Specific health conditions that can benefit from PBE include allergies, high blood pressure, varicose veins, and diabetes. Their anti-inflammatory activity can reduce joint pain and muscle soreness. * Anti-Aging Pycnogenol improves blood flow in the body and also supports vascular strength. Aside from this, it also reduces any risk of stroke and heart disease. *

Antioxidant

PBE are also rich in active compounds proanthocyanidins, and B vitamins. It also contains various other antioxidants such as gallic acid and catechins. Proanthocyanidins are 20 times more potent and active than traditionally known antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E. Antioxidants not only reduce the signs of aging, but also maintain the health of our circulatory system. One can expect a disease free and healthy life with regular consumption of supplements enriched with PBE. *

Cholesterol

Like various other antioxidants, proanthocyanidins also prevent oxidantion of LDL cholesterol, because after oxidation LDL cholesterol forms plaques on the interior of the arterial walls resulting in heart disease. Aside from this, it also prevents the formation of blood clots.

Few other health benefits of pine bark extracts:

• Boost circulation, and reduces muscular pain and cramps

• Improves leg ulcers • Lowers blood pressure • Improves memory • Minimizes asthma and hayfever symptoms • Improves blood glucose control in type II diabetes • Helps in preventing/treating diabetic foot ulcers • Improves menopausal flushing and night sweats • Minimizes stiffness and osteoarthritis pain • Minimizes menstrual pain

PBE- Dosage advice

The usual daily recommended dose of PBE, (pycnogenol supplements), is between 50 to 200 mg. It not only reduces your risk of wrinkles, heart disease, but also boosts your circulatory system to a great extent. You can also seek advice on taking PBE supplements from your doctor as they are in best position to guide you in this matter. If required, your doctor can also refer you to a nutritionist.
